Central heating installation & repairs

Full system installs, boiler replacements, upgrades and breakdowns — the core of what this firm does week in, week out.

A central heating system is more than the box on the wall. Before anything is quoted, the existing pipework, the radiators, the cylinder and the controls get looked at, because a new boiler dropped onto a system that cannot carry it is the most expensive mistake in the trade. From there it might be a straight replacement, a full system install, a combi conversion, or simply putting right the one fault that has been making the house cold. Breakdowns, upgrades, radiator changes, valve and pump replacements and system flushing all sit under this heading. The work is commissioned properly and the controls are set up with you before the van leaves.

Gas and oil heating systems

Both fuels, one firm — Gas Safe registered engineers working to current regulations, and oil-fired systems for the houses off the gas grid.

In the business's own words: a team of Gas Safe registered engineers serving Tunbridge Wells and other areas of Kent and Sussex, with all work carried out in line with the latest regulations. Gas is the majority of the work, but a great many houses in the villages around Tunbridge Wells and over the Sussex border never got a mains gas connection and run on oil instead — and oil-fired heating is covered here too. That matters when a property has an oil boiler and you would rather not run two separate trades. Whatever the fuel, ask to see the engineer's registration card at the door; that is the check worth making with anybody.

Underfloor heating

Wet underfloor heating in old houses as well as new ones — surveyed on site, because floor build-up decides everything.

Underfloor heating suits older properties as well as new builds, but the answer is never the same twice. What decides it is the floor construction, how much height you can give up, what insulation sits beneath, and whether your heat source will happily run at the lower flow temperature underfloor heating is designed around. All of that gets looked at on site. Done properly, the result is even warmth from the floor up, no radiators eating wall space, and lower flow temperatures that suit a modern condensing boiler. The manifold, the zoning and the controls are as important as the pipe in the floor, and they are set up and balanced rather than left on a default.

Pressurised hot water cylinders

Unvented cylinders fed straight off the mains: full flow at every tap, no loft tank, no booster pump.

A pressurised — unvented — hot water cylinder gives excellent flow rates without a header tank in the loft and without an additional pump. Shower and bath performance is transformed, more than one outlet can be run at once, and the loft space comes back. The requirements are an adequate incoming mains supply and a correctly fitted set of safety controls: expansion vessel, pressure-reducing valve, temperature and pressure relief, and a discharge run to somewhere sensible. That is why this is a survey-first job rather than a phone quote. Existing cylinders are serviced and re-commissioned too, which is something a lot of unvented systems have never had.

General plumbing

The everyday work: taps, leaks, cylinders, outside taps, kitchen connections, stopcocks and pipework repairs.

Alongside the heating there is all the ordinary plumbing a house throws up. Dripping and seized taps, leaks under floors and behind units, toilets that will not stop filling, low pressure, a stopcock that has not turned since the eighties, kitchen appliance connections, outside taps, and the pipework alterations that come with moving a wall or a worktop. These are the jobs most people struggle to get anyone to come out for. They are quoted in the same way as anything else — honestly, and after somebody has looked.

Bathroom installations

Complete bathrooms, designed with you and fitted by one firm — plumbing, electrics and sanitaryware included.

The bathroom fitters here work closely with you to design and install the bathroom you have actually got in mind, then take care of the related plumbing and electrical requirements so that it is one complete service rather than three trades and three diaries. That covers stripping out, first-fix pipework, the shower and any hot water upgrade the shower needs to work properly, the sanitaryware, the lighting and extraction requirements, and the finish. Because the same firm does the central heating, a towel radiator or a rethink of the hot water is part of the same conversation instead of a separate job six weeks later.

Bathroom tiling

Tiling done in-house in porcelain, ceramic or natural stone — not handed to a tiler who turns up a fortnight later.

Tiles are fitted to suit both the practical side and the look you are after, in porcelain, ceramic or natural stone. Keeping the tiling in-house is the reason bathroom jobs here do not stall: the same people who did the first fix know exactly where the pipework runs, where the falls need to be, and how the tray, the screen and the tiling have to meet so that the thing does not leak in three years. Full wall and floor tiling, part-tiling, splashbacks and wet-room detailing are all part of it.

Where we work

Out of Rusthall, across Kent and into Sussex.

The workshop is in Rusthall, a mile or so west of Tunbridge Wells town centre. Most weeks are spent in the Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge area; the business describes itself as happy to travel within roughly fifty miles, which takes in a good part of west Kent and East Sussex.

Tunbridge Wells

Home ground. Rusthall, Southborough, Langton Green, Speldhurst and the town itself — the Victorian and Edwardian stock where the pipework almost never matches the drawings.

West Kent

Tonbridge, Sevenoaks, Cranbrook, Edenbridge and the villages in between, on both gas and oil.

East Sussex

Over the county line towards Crowborough, Wadhurst, Uckfield and Tunbridge Wells' Sussex fringe.

Further out
